Puma Band/Strings Instrument Selection

Greetings parents, and congratulations!  Your son or daughter’s instrument selection for the year has been finalized.  After being guided through introductions, live demos, and several videos, your son or daughter has come to a decision and met approval with our ensemble goals for balanced instrumentation in the class.

What to do next…

*Percussionists will use school equipment, but please purchase this pack if you are able to:

https://www.steveweissmusic.com/product/liberty-i-xavier-university-stick-pack/stick-mallet-pack

Rent

By far, the best option for most students is to rent an instrument from Nick Rail Music.  Though the initial process is usually not without its bumps, since Nick Rail services most music programs in Ventura County, it’s still the most convenient option, with most rentals being a part of a rent-to-own program.  Confirm the details of the RtO program with Nick Rail.

Simply go to: http://www.nickrailmusic.com/t-Rent.Instrument_Selection.aspx , select the correct instrument and size (strings), our city and school, and proceed to checkout.  Note that a “Starter Pack” is recommended but not required, and a “Shoulder Rest” is *highly* recommended when selecting accessories.

If you plan on renting, please complete the online form by Sunday, September 8 in order to ensure the best chance that your instrument is available for pickup at Nick Rail Rental Night on September 12, 6pm at the MVMS Music Room.

Buy

If you’d rather buy an instrument right off the bat, PLEASE contact me first at kgray@mrpk.org, as most brands available on popular sources (Amazon, Guitar Center, etc.) are of low quality and are not a sound financial investment.

Borrow

If you need to borrow an instrument from school, they will be assigned on a financial need basis.  We do ask for a $35 donation to help offset the cost of maintenance if you borrow an instrument. Please note that our inventory is limited, and we cannot guarantee the correct size, initially.

Private Lessons

Also, please check http://www.mesaverdemusic.com/, and click on “Private Lessons” for information about practicing with an expert on your instrument!

Jazz Audition Music

Greetings!

Below is the downloadable 2019-2020 Jazz audition music.  Sign up for an auditon time in the Music Room.  Time slots are currently posted.

Requirements are as follows:

1.  One major scale of Mr. Gray's choosing: Bb, Eb, Ab, or F

2.  The audition music, provided below.  Practice with the linked accompaniment mp3.

3.  A short sight-reading excerpt to be provided at the time of audition.

Students are encouraged to seek help with the audition music from a private teacher.  Speak with Mrs. Garcia, or Mr. Gray for instrument-specific help.

Winds, Guitar and Piano: All music, plus improvisation if 8th (optional improve if 6/7th)

Drums: Straight through, with fills where appropriate.

Alto/Bari Saxophone, mp3

Tenor Saxophone, mp3

Trumpet, mp3

Trombone, mp3

Piano, mp3

Bass, mp3

Drums, mp3

Guitar, mp3

This year, the band configuration will depend on how many students audition.   Only students prepared with all materials will be considered for the top group, so be prepared, and ask any questions at least a week before your audition.

Good skill to everyone!

Mr. Gray

6th Grade Parent Meeting

New to the program? Welcome!

As we start our first full week of school, Mr. Gray and Mrs. Garcia will be holding a meeting for 6th grade parents on Thursday, August 29, at 6pm in the band room. Learn about the music program at Mesa, what your student will need, and get answers to your questions! (Because we all know how flyers get swallowed in a backpack)

It's also a great opportunity to purchase sweatshirts, sign up to volunteer at events or on the board (we still need a secretary!), or to find out sponsorship information.

Hope you can join us!
