Coffee Concerts Wednesday October 30

Hello Parents!

You are cordially invited to Mesa Music’s first performance of the year, on Wednesday October 30 for our 13th Annual Coffee Concerts!

Each class, or ensemble, will put on an “open house” style performance, where you get to see a little bit of what we do on a daily basis.  7th and 8th grade groups will conclude the performance time with one or two pieces we’ve worked up over the first weeks of school.

Each performance will start roughly around the time their class meets, and last 30-40 minutes.  Bands will perform in the Multi Purpose Room (MPR), while Strings will be in the Music Room (F2).  The Mesa Verde Music Boosters will be providing coffee for its namesake event.

Here’s the schedule:

  • Puma Strings: 9:00a - 9:55a, F2
  • Wind Ensemble: 10:00a - 10:52a, MPR
  • String Orchestra: 10:57a - 11:49a, F2
  • Puma Band: 12:34p - 1:26p, MPR
  • Wind Symphony: 1:31p - 2:23p, MPR
  • Chamber Strings: 2:28p - 3:20p, F2

If your son/daughter has their performance before their PE class, please send them to school dressed in concert attire, with a casual change of clothes for after PE.

If your son/daughter has their performance after their PE class, please send them to school dressed casually, and have them change into concert attire at the end of their PE class.

Proper concert attire is outlined in the Music Handbook, but is generally all black semi-formal wear from the waist down, with Mesa Music T-shirts for Puma Band/Strings, white button up oxford shirts and burgundy ties for Wind Symphony/String Orchestra, and black button up oxford shirts and burgundy ties for Wind Ensemble/Chamber Strings.  Mesa T-shirts and ties for the appropriate ensembles will be handed out tomorrow, Friday October 25.

We hope to see you there!

8th Grade Night

Hello 8th Grade Families!

This Friday October 11 is one of our favorite events of the year - 8th Grade Night with the MHS Marching Musketeers at this Friday's home football game.  This is a mandatory performance for all 8th graders, and optional (high recommended!) for 7th graders in our top ensembles.  The kids are aware, but here are the details:

Call Time:

4:40pm @ MHS Baseball Field (across from Vons)

Any Mesa Music or Moorpark attire.  Dress warmly, as it gets chilly in late in the game.

What to bring:

Instrument (or sticks, percussion), 8th grade night music, and an open mind!

Strings, too?

YES, strings too!  A number of string players have continued on and joined marching band, and it happens every year.  They go on to become section leaders, drum majors, and conductors in the group.  Friday may be more about the social/fun aspect of games, but Moorpark's Marching Band is one steeped in tradition, and there's a reason for the 95% retention rate once students join. It's FUN.

After the game, we'll march back to the Band Room, and students will be dismissed from there.  Dismissal will likely be around 10:00pm.

Parents are more than welcome to come, but will need to pay admission into the game. There's often a large block of band parents at each game, and it's almost as fun for adults as it is the kids.

Students are encouraged to seek help with the audition music from a private teacher.  Speak with Mrs. Garcia, or Mr. Gray for instrument-specific help.

Puma Band/Strings Instrument Selection

Greetings parents, and congratulations!  Your son or daughter’s instrument selection for the year has been finalized.  After being guided through introductions, live demos, and several videos, your son or daughter has come to a decision and met approval with our ensemble goals for balanced instrumentation in the class.

What to do next…

*Percussionists will use school equipment, but please purchase this pack if you are able to:

By far, the best option for most students is to rent an instrument from Nick Rail Music.  Though the initial process is usually not without its bumps, since Nick Rail services most music programs in Ventura County, it’s still the most convenient option, with most rentals being a part of a rent-to-own program.  Confirm the details of the RtO program with Nick Rail.

Simply go to: , select the correct instrument and size (strings), our city and school, and proceed to checkout.  Note that a “Starter Pack” is recommended but not required, and a “Shoulder Rest” is *highly* recommended when selecting accessories.

If you plan on renting, please complete the online form by Sunday, September 8 in order to ensure the best chance that your instrument is available for pickup at Nick Rail Rental Night on September 12, 6pm at the MVMS Music Room.

If you’d rather buy an instrument right off the bat, PLEASE contact me first at, as most brands available on popular sources (Amazon, Guitar Center, etc.) are of low quality and are not a sound financial investment.

If you need to borrow an instrument from school, they will be assigned on a financial need basis.  We do ask for a $35 donation to help offset the cost of maintenance if you borrow an instrument. Please note that our inventory is limited, and we cannot guarantee the correct size, initially.

Private Lessons

Also, please check, and click on “Private Lessons” for information about practicing with an expert on your instrument!
