Future Freshman Night & 9th Grade Auditions

Greeting Mesa 8th Grade Families!

I wanted to make you aware of a couple of important dates coming up in the next few weeks that are pertinent to all 8th grade musicians.  In the New Gym at MHS, there will be a general meeting for ALL incoming freshmen.  Immediately following the general meeting, the Instrumental Music Program will hose an informational meeting in Room Q-1 (Band Room).  There will be a short presentation and will be a great opportunity to ask any questions about any aspect of the music program.  This is the best place to get definitive information regarding the compatibility of other campus activities (sports, academic programs, etc.) with music.

Current 8th grade students will be given the opportunity to audition for placement in the Moorpark HS Music program.  Please note that anyone interested in the music program will be automatically admitted, and that the audition is for placement in the correct class period, as there are multiple levels of band and strings which are open to all grades based on musicianship level.

For Concert Bands, Strings, and Marching Band

Sign up for an audition spot for the MHS Instrumental Music Program by going to http://www.signupgenius.com/go/70A0C4AACA92EA02-incoming1 and choosing a time that works best for you.  At your audition:

1.       Woodwinds/Brass/Percussion - Play the 2 major scales and chromatic scale from the Junior High CBDA scale sheet.  Be sure to play with the articulations indicated.  Scale sheets can be found by going to http://cbda.org/index.php/auditions.   Click on your instrument from the JUNIOR HIGH list to find the appropriate sheet.

2.       Strings – Play a D and G major scale in one octave, and an E melodic minor scale in 2 octaves.

3.       Choose a short song of your choice (minimum of 16 measures, no longer than 2 minutes in performance length) that you have been working on with your private instructor, on your own, or in your school band or orchestra.  Pick one that demonstrates your skill level.  Accompaniment is not required.

4.       You will be given a short song to sight read during your audition.

5.       Come prepared with your questions!

Marching Band participation is not required, but HIGHLY recommended.  Make the leap - it will be one of the best decisions you can make!

Winter Concerts

Congratulations to ALL performers for your excellent performances in our two night Winter Concerts!  Beginners - you're off to a truly excellent start!  7th graders - the hard work you've put in for the last year and a half is starting to turn into real, beautiful music!  8th graders - you represent what's possible halfway through your 3rd year.  Your achievements are quite fun for this music teacher to watch.
